Inspiration For Moms

I love this book. It is called Gifted Hands: the Ben Carson Story. I decided to relax and read a good book again. I pulled this favorite out and curled up by the fire. I was again inspired by this godly man and by his godly mother. AS I read again about Ben's life I was reminded of how his mother, though she herself could not read, encouraged her sons to read. She turned off their TV shows and made them go to the library. They were required to write a report for her each week from what they had read. Their reports were about everything from lizards to obsidian. She held their reports and nodded and smiled as if she were reading them. Her boys did not know she couldn't read. Their knowledge, vocabulary and spelling all increased as they continued this method of learning. They did not like it at first, but they obeyed their mother because they loved and respected her. Ben became the best neuro sergeon in the world. His older brother Chris became a successful engineer. I am inspired once again to turn off our TV, even if it's supposedly "educational," and to get out books. I am having Garrett, my nine year old, write a report for me about ants, which he has been studying from our books. God bless you Dear Mothers.
I hope you are encouraged by this post. I'm feeling lighter and more thankful to the Lord in guiding me back to this amzing book again. The book has been made into a movie recently and is a must see for the whole family.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Proverbs 9:10

Oh Kathi! I have to find this movie and this book! I love to read biographies anyway but this one sounds exceptional. Ironically we've had the TV off since Thursday except for church-approved DVDs for missionaries and what a difference it's made in our home. Thank you so much for leading me to this book and movie. You honestly inspire me to be a better person.
Your friend,

I read this book many years ago and found it to be very inspiring. I wasn't aware of the movie, but will be sure to see it soon.
