Small Town USA: The Barber Shop

I visited Garrett's school for "Breakfast Buddies," the other morning. It's a great program to get parents and children interested in reading together. They served us breakfast in the library. After looking at the photo I realized Garrett needed a hair cut badly, especially with our nephew Mackenzie's wedding on Saturday the 18th.
So, the next day...

Bright and early Miss Kathi drove to the hair place. She had no make-up on. She was wearing glasses. And...Kathi was not concerned about that. This is small town USA, where people can just be themselves. I love that. I could go to our little market in my slippers and bathrobe if I wanted to. Not that I have, but I could, and that 's amazingly comforting to me.
Here is our son Garrett, the one who desperately needs the hair cut.
This is the secret place. The quiet place. It is the tiniest little barber shop serving mostly the elderly. Carine and her mother run this sweet little place. It's the size of a little Dutch Brothers coffee stop. The price is right and the job is done quite nicely.
As we arrived three dear old ladies were leaving after having their hair set and combed. Two other dear old ladies were in the process of being permed. This is a place nobody knows about except us locals. Notice the darling little hound, "Princess," on the couch.
This is Carine's mother, Carlene, making a cute little senior citizen feel pretty.
Princess is adorable and pampered. She protects everybody in the shop.
Jessica, our daughter waits patiently for her turn. She got her hair trimmed as well. I'm glad you came along with us to this special secret place in small town USA, where just about everyone knows everybody and each looks out for the other. Substitute teaching is going well. Thanks for your prayers and well wishes. Enjoy your day. Love, Kathi
"Before Paul sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because of a vow he had taken." Acts 18:18

I dont think people that dont live in Oregon will know what a Dutch Brothers is. I have only seen one in California and I'm not sure about Washington. Im happy your teachings are going well. I love little family owned and operated shops.

What a neat little place. I grew up near a town of 1800 people and I know what you are talking about. My mom had her hair done in a little place like this:) I'm glad all is going well with your substitute teaching! Have a great day, Elena

I just love the old little barber shops! Oh, and I would love to go to the store in my bathrobe and slippers. How great would that be. Well, one time I did. It was about 2am and I was very sick and I went out to get some medicine. But no one was even in the store. I guess that doesn't count. LOL! I am glad that you are enjoying your substitute teaching is going well.

Hi Kathi..
(((Hugz))) I love the thought of living in the country and experiencing country life once again just as I did as a little girl. as the saying goes you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl!! *smile* I remember everything being in walking distance and the little shops, bakery, barber shops with the swirley thingy outside lol.
Your son is a cutie!! Thanks for blessing me with your visit and for sharing your heart with me.

I think Princess could use a trim too. What a wonderful spot!

I can't wait to hear more about the teaching.

Your little guy doesn't look too excited about getting his hair cut.

That is so cute! It reminds me of Dolly Pardon's beauty shop in Steel Magnolias! I'm so glad that you have such a neat little spot to go to. Garrett's hair turned out so cute!

It was wonderful to sit and have coffee with you yesterday and have a little hen talk while Eric picked apples! Thanks for being such a great sister. I'm feeling a little blue today, please keep the prayers up for me!

I love you!
Sharon

I love small town USA! I'm glad you had a day out with just Garrett. Did I tell you that if Kellianne had been a boy she was going to be Garrett? I love that name! Just thought, if you were driving and Garrett was in the back, who took the pictures of you?!

It was great seeing you and your family. Too bad we didnt get to visit more. We will be down in the area First weekend of Nov, for a horse show and to make Apple Cider at a friends farm. It should be fun! They have the whole Cider Press set up, and we get the apples from Shawn s Grandmas orchard.
I hope to see you soon!

Oh Kathi!!!!!
I have missed you, but I know you have all your priorities in order, and are doing God's will.
I have taken all my time and have really been doing a ton of Bible reading....teaching and organizing and changing home school curriculum! Oh it has been a journey let me tell ya. But as I am sure you know you have to find what works for you.
I love the posts about this being such a small town, oh how I wish we were out there, the lifestyle, the calmness, the open nature, the freedom it is just beautiful.
And I love when you do the posts about the apple cider press, I remember when you did last year, it must be such a blessing to take some to the neighbors, I just love that idea. I hope school is going well for the children and I hope teaching has been good to you too.
Will be back to check in now more frequently...love ya and miss you...

lots of big ((hugs))
