Black Berry Picking With My Kids

To me, it's the simple things that don't cost money, that create the best memories. Every summer in August we either hike or ride the 4-wheeler way back on our property and find black berries. It's a special time I like to spend with my children. I know I will miss them so much when they are gone. I can't imagine doing this alone when they "leave my nest." I'm sure I will though, and then there will be hope for grandchildren to do it with me some day.
After picking black berries we climbed down the bank into the creek to cool off, for it is 95 degrees outside. About a mile back on our acreage there is this old mill. It is on the other side of the creek. It's so interesting to come back here and swim. I believe the mill was built around 1875. This is near the spot I took my headliner photo a couple of years ago and posted about it. It's eerie, almost spooky, like being in a ghost town back here, but very very inspiring too. We know the care-takers and know that it is a safe place for us to be for a little picnic. The girls brought along a few snacks. I remember fishing with my dad. He usually brought Vienna sausages, Ritz crackers and Pepsi. Just being with Dad was so fun and made me feel special. I loved it that he brought snacks for us. If you want your teens to spend time with you like this, then never stop...never stop. Keep doing these kinds of things with them as the years go by. Stay interested in them, but mostly keep it simple and just be with them. You are EVERYTHING to them until about the age of 9, and then you become less. This is a natural process and us moms need to know this. But, you can still remain in their lives, just let them know, that, "We are going berry picking today." Let them know they are included.
Remember Dear Mothers that good times do not have to be expensive times. Kids just want to be with their parents. They love you and your interest in them means so much to them. Hug those teenagers, they love it and need it too. "So that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men (human philosophy), but in the power of God." 1 Corinthians 2:5

Dear Kathi,
This is a wonderful post! I can remember having adventures with our three children when they were teens. What was sad is I didn't see many other families doing the same. We always had a dinner hour where we sat down and ate dinner at a family table. Now our kids are all grown up with babies of their own. But they still appreciate all of the family time memories.
Hugs,

Darlene
