Painting the Bookshelf: Day One

Remember this ugly dark room with that dark paneling? Well, we are in the middle of changing it to a brighter happier room. So far we've taken down the paneling, dry walled it and painted it. I will show the complete room when it is finished. Today I will show day one of painting the built in book shelf.
The bookshelf had a very dark stain covering it. I used a sander to rough it up and remove some of the stain. It took me all morning to do this.
I was tired when I finally finished, but happy that it turned out very well.
I pulled out all the drawers and took the hardware off so I could sand and paint them too. Notice that there is some sort of sticker or something on the bottom of the shelf. I will show that in detail at the end of the post. It's kind of cool.
I probably should not have removed the little door as putting it back was not easy.
My kitchen looked like this for awhile.
I placed my camera inside the bottom of the shelf and flipped the picture so I could read this. This bookshelf was apparently constructed with old boards from a crate; a Band-Aid crate. When I zoomed in it said 1926. Our house was built in 1913, so the shelf was obviously added later. I love stuff like this.
After wiping down the shelf with a damp cloth I painted the whole thing with primer. This took me the whole afternoon. I am so tired, but sooooo happy for all that I accomplished. I think I will paint it a creamy white. Later I will post the painted and completed shelf. I'm sad about the election, but I know that our Lord appoints leaders for His purposes. We must trust in Him even though we do not understand. The Lord's plans and thoughts are higher than our thoughts and plans. He does things that amaze us and we will see all He will do. Have a good day, Ladies. Kathi

Hi Kathi! I found your blog from Mabel's House and seems we're both paiting book shelves this week! I'm exhausted too. Enjoyed snoopin' around your blog.

That sounds like a lot of work. Can't wait to see more. Our country certainly needs healing and unity after all this election stuff. I'm thankful that whatever future I may imagine God will be there---whatever He allows...we may not like, but I trust that it will have eternal consequences in awakening people to Him.

I love the shelf and what a need find with the sticker. I, too, love things with a story. It will be so beautiful once you have completed.

Hi Kathi :)

My pantry (albeit much smaller) looks like that too right now. It's so not like me either! I think it's on my list for tomorrow :)

The shelves look wonderful and how neat that you found the sticker!

I'm not happy either, but I think there's a lesson coming from it soon.

hugs,
rue

Wow Kathi! That is a lot of work and it looks so much better! I love how light and bright it is looking. I love that Bandaid sign, did you pry it off so you can display it somewhere? How cool is that? I wonder if there are other things hidden in the house!

We are sad about the election too, but Jesus is our leader and we will do as He calls us to do, we will pray for our leaders.

Love you so much!
Sharon
