Very Special Children's Book ~ Show and Tell

It's show and tell at Kelli's house. Please visit her for lots of wonderful things.

Today I want to show you this treasure. This book was given to my mom and her sister when they were children.
I love this book for it's beautiful illustrations and the captivating stories. Our daddy used to read this to us in the evening. I have such happy memories of him reading and showing us the pictures.
I used to think that these two little girls were my mom and her sister Dorothy, because their hair coloring was just like these two girls. Below is a list of illustrators and the original price.
As you can see the cost in 1923 was $36.49. Uncle Charles gave the book at Christmas time 1945, so it was over 20 years old when given. He had used it in his classroom when he was a school teacher.
Look at this darling picture of the wise old mouse asking the other mice, "Who will bell the cat?"

This illustration of the Bandog is so cute. I love the way he is drawn.
The detail of this alligator is scary. I used to be in awe when looking at him. This illustrator was Bert R. Elliott.
A favorite story, which we asked our daddy to read us over and over again is Mrs. Chinchilla the cat. It is absolutely adorable. My favorite line in the book talks about her tongue.

Here is a quote from the story: "I'll tell you what that tongue had in it: a hair brush, a comb, a tooth-brush, a nail brush, a sponge, a towel, and a cake of soap!"

A teasing boy stole one of her kittens, and she went after the boy, and scolded him, and scratched him with long sharp scratches. I can remember feeling afraid of cat's claws when hearing that, and determining never to tease a cat. The story was written by Kate Wiggin

Another favorite story was Little Burnt-Face. It is the Cinderella story from an American Indian point of view. In the story her mean sisters scalded her face with coals from the fire, and singed her pretty black hair. I was such a sensitive child, I felt her pain. It was so sad, yet so thrilling when in the end Little Burn-Face gets to marry the Great Chief.
