On My Soap Box

Who risks their lives daily? but get paid a lot less than pro athletes and entertainers? Our fire fighters of course. It is not right.
Who has to pay for an education and then continue to pay fees and pay for more schooling just to keep her job? Our teachers do, and they get paid an average of $30,000 per year. It's not right.
Who is highly trained and risks his or her life daily for you and me, but gets paid a small amount for all the sacrifice? Our police officers. This is unjust.
Who must go to and pay for college for many years and has the responsibility of other people's lives constantly in her or his hands? Our nurses, but they get paid far less than they ought to. Who has to pay for a college degree and spends countless ours helping those in financial crisis, helping the neediest of us all, patiently and compassionately doing their job, usually in some of the oldest buildings in the city? Our social workers of course. They get very little recognition or respect for what they do and of course very little pay. This is not right.
Which people are highly trained and bravely saving others' lives yet don't receive the pay due them? Our paramedics.  Something should be done.
Who is highly trained and disciplined and risks his or her life daily? Our military of course, yet they suffer sometimes more than any of us ever will, and do not receive their medical benefits quickly or adequately and or the very best medical help out there, which should be made available to them. Something is not right.
Each year more and more is asked of our teachers. Class sizes are increasing and the number of disruptive students seems to triple each year, yet teacher salaries stay the same. It is very difficult to teach 26 squiggly children and have five or six major disruptions or outbursts within the first ten minutes of a lesson.  The teacher is under pressure to teach under near impossible conditions.
Wouldn't it be nice if teachers, policemen, nurses, paramedics, social workers, firemen and military personnel did NOT have to pay for a library card? or to get into the zoo? a movie, a ball game or a museum?
Wouldn't it be nice if we gave them all a discount for gasoline?
Wouldn't it be nice if their groceries were discounted, along with their clothing, driver's license, insurance and taxes?  We could not make this happen, but wouldn't it be nice if some of the wealthiest entertainers chose to pay more for these things to make things even out a bit. Am I sounding like a communist? I'm sorry if I am, because I am not one. I love where we live in free USA, but I'm just pointing out this huge discrepancy. It is not right when an athlete or an entertainer makes millions of dollars for one game or one movie, or show. Just not right. Any suggestions? or should I just let sleeping dogs lie?
Blessings, Kathi

I have no answers but I have to say it made me sick when I read on CNN about the $39,000.00 backpacks that were "flying off the shelves." Yeah, you read that right, $39,000.00 for a backpack. My thought was if someone could afford that much for a backpack just imagine what good that type of money (or even 1/3 of that amount) could do if it was donated to a local food bank or some other very worthy cause. It makes me literally sick too to think that the rescue workers, which include firemen and police personnel, who helped after 9/11 are having to declare bankruptcy bz they can't pay their medical bills from problems brought on by the job they were doing down there.

I hope someone else can give you some answers to your query bz I'm at a loss to even understand it at all.

Oh my goodness that is a lot of money for a back pack. I agree with you. I wish we could just make a rule that if you make over a certain amount that from that point on a percent will go into a bucket to be divided among the various groups who need it. Oprah, Bill Gates, pro athletes, where are you? Thanks for your comment Cindy. K.

Oh Kathi, I've preached this till I'm blue in the face. You are so right lady, it is so unjust.

Great post and insight! My son was just telling me last week about the professional ball teams that are on "lock-down" or something like that, in protest for higher salaries! My response, you've got to be kidding me!!! Of all the people in our country in professions that are NEEDED, that make a difference, and they earn small, meager salaries. Oh the greed, ...just terrible!

I emailed you a little while ago. I have a jewelry party lined up this afternoon, so I probably won't be online until after 8:30 or so. I'll check out your email then! :)

Well, I am sure you do not go to pro ball games too often, but how about movies? We used to easily see 2 or 3 movies a month. I have started only going to movies that have a Christian message. The rest I rent from RedBox or get for free from the library.
We live in a fallen world where people are worshiped with $$$ because that is where people find fulfillment- instead of in the Lord.
Until God takes us home, I am afraid it is only going to get worse.

God says in His word that He will fight our just causes. Things are so out of whack in our country, and things do not seem fair, but we need to be grateful for the things we have and remember that we have so much more than people in third world countries. I am concerned that America's greed is going to catch up with us. We need to put our trust in God.
