Antique Bell

My husband Stacey found this antique bell at the Lafayette School House: Oregon's largest (so they say) antique display. We assumed it had been a church or school bell.We found the perfect place to put it. My husband had the post hole dug and in the ground with cement in 20 minutes. He amazes me.I was cutting up pears to can, and looked up from my work and saw that he was nearly finished putting it up.
It is a darling bell. I love the way it sounds when it rings. To me it sounds like it may have been on a fire engine. It does not seem large enough to have been on top of a church or school. My husband does things the way my dad would do them. I love the way the pull rope comes down and is attached to this wood hook. The rope is wound around this wood handle made from a tree limb. It is fun to hear the bell ringing. It's a great way to call everyone in for lunch, rather than honking the truck horn like I usually do. My dad came over for a visit and we think he may have solved the mystery for us. He thinks it came off an old locomotive. Trains had both bells and whistles in the old days.
We had such a wonderful time talking with Dad and really enjoyed having him out here with us. Love ya Dad. Thanks for helping us figure out where this bell may have come from. "A day of the Lord is coming..." Zech. 14:1 "On that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives..." Zech. 14:4 "On that day HOLY IS THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses." Zech. 14:20

Great bell. I LOVE it. It would be interesting if there is some kind of marking on it to see if you could find out exactly where it came from!

The bell is very nice, indeed difficult to say where it came from. Here I would say it comes from an old school !
I looked more at your house which I think is beautiful !

I love your new bell. Now every time you look out the window at the bell you will think of the anniversary trip you took when you bought it. How romantic. Is that a parking meter at your deck by where your dad is sitting? Very Neat.
Have a Great day

That's a really fun bell. I once bought a bell from a 1905 firestation off of ebay once. I think you guys did a great job of displaying it out in your yard. It looks great!

What unique yard decor. I love it! I'm glad your father was able to help you figure out where it came from and I believe he is correct. It looks about the size of the bells that were on steam trains. There is a train with a bell at a pioneer village near here and it looks much the same.

Your hubby did a great job of installing it and the bell is a great way to call everyone in for lunch.

I certainly enjoyed your show and tell today. Thanks for stopping by to pay me a visit.

Blessings,
Mary

I grew up on a farm and this would have solved so many problems for us! You just can't yell loud enough so everyone can hear to come in for lunch or dinner! I love it and the way Stacy put it up! I want one just for decoration now!! I don't think the neighbors would like it if anyone rang it though since we're in a subdivision but for your area it's a very creative wonderful solution to honking the truck horn!!

I love the bell!!! In the picture of your father sitting on the bench, I was wondering are those parking meters next to him with the flowers hanging on it?

I love your bell. We got a bell for our daughter who lives in Minnesota on 20 acres, just so she too can call the kids home when they are out playing.

That is so perfect! I love it and the story that goes with it. That is something my parents would have done. In fact on their 50th anniversary they gave each other a large brass bell (with a wood handle) to call each other into the house when the phone rang and the other one was away at the barn or somewhere. Great posting Kathi, and I'm so glad you had such a fun anniversary. xo rachel

Great bell! Great husband, and Dad too!

The bell brought back memories for me, my grandparents had a bell on a pole like that on their farm. She would ring it to tell them to come from the fields to dinner (lunch) and supper!
